Stop Copying Your Competitors' Prices. Do This Math Instead.

To price mobile detailing services, work backward from your income goal and your real capacity, not from competitor prices. If you can physically do 20 details a month and you need $6,000, your average ticket must be $300. Your calendar sets your price. The market just tests it.

Every pricing article tells you to "research your local market." So you look up three competitors, undercut the middle one by ten bucks, and call it a strategy. That is not pricing. That is copying someone else's homework, and the guy you copied probably copied someone else who is broke.

Your calendar is the only pricing calculator that matters

Mobile detailing has a hard ceiling that shop owners do not have: you drive to every job. Between drive time, setup, teardown, and the actual work, a full detail eats 3 to 4 hours of your day. Be honest about how many you can actually do in a month. For most solo operators it lands between 20 and 30, and that assumes the weather cooperates.

Now do the math in reverse:

    • You want to take home $6,000 a month.
    • Add supplies, fuel, insurance, and software, call it $1,200.
    • You need $7,200 in revenue.
    • At 24 details a month, your average ticket must be $300.

If you are charging $150, you cannot fix that with hustle. There are not enough hours. You would need 48 jobs a month, which is two full details a day, every day, no rain, no no-shows, no life. The math does not care how hard you work.

What the cheapest detailer in town actually earns

Here is the part nobody says out loud: the cheapest guy in your market is usually the busiest and the brokest. His calendar is packed with $99 full details for customers who chose him for exactly one reason, price. Those customers leave the moment someone cheaper shows up, they tip nothing, they haggle, and they never buy the ceramic coating.

Being busy is not the goal. Being profitable at your real capacity is the goal. Ten $300 customers beat twenty $150 customers in every way that matters: less fuel, less wear on your body, fewer no-shows, better reviews, and customers who actually rebook.

Raising prices filters your customers, and that is the point

When you raise prices, you will lose some customers. Good. You are not losing revenue, you are trading your worst customers for open calendar slots you can sell at the right rate. The customers who stay at $300 are the ones who value the work, refer their neighbors, and say yes when you offer a maintenance plan.

The fear is always "nobody in my area will pay that." Someone in your area is already paying that. The question is whether they can find you, and whether you look like the kind of operation that is worth it. A detailer with 80 five-star reviews and a professional website can charge $300. A detailer with a Facebook page and a Venmo handle cannot, even if his work is better.

How to raise prices without losing your regulars

Do not apologize and do not over-explain. Three moves:

    1. New customers get the new price immediately. They never knew the old one existed.
    2. Regulars get 60 days notice and a reason to stay. "My prices go up March 1. As a thank-you for being a regular, you're locked at the current rate if you're on a monthly maintenance plan." You just turned a price increase into recurring revenue.
    3. Anchor with a premium option. Add a package above your current top package. Suddenly your old "expensive" option looks like the reasonable middle choice, because now it is.
